Rita Gsenger (Freie Universität and Weizenbaum Institute) and Dr. Annett Heft (Universität Tübingen, Freie Universität and Weizenbaum Institute) have contributed to the latest issue of Machine Against the Rage, published in Autumn 2024. The article, “Attention Is All They Need: Eine Analyse der Nutzung generative KI in rechtsalternativen Netzwerken,” is a part of the current issue, “Artificial Intolerance: Künstliche Intelligenz im Bildermarkt des Hasses,” which focuses on AI-generated images and their potential dangers.
In this realm, the study examines the role of generative artificial intelligence (AI) within right-wing alternative networks, particularly on Telegram. While concerns about AI-generated content overwhelming digital platforms persist, the research finds that less than 5% of images in these networks are AI-generated. This suggests that, despite the availability of AI tools, their adoption among right-wing groups remains relatively low.
The study also highlights that AI-generated images in these contexts are not used solely for deception. Instead, they serve a range of purposes, including propaganda and community-building. The research demonstrates the need to understand the complex applications of AI in political communication rather than only assuming deception as the primary motive.
